Here is a picture Dr. Leve took at a different time showing a tantric Buddhist priest conducting a ritual at the image of Buddha Amitabha. Amitabha is one of five Buddhas flanking the base of the chaitya’s dome. He rests at the Western cardinal point of the stupa, facing the Deva Dharma Mahavihar. The deity is protected by a metal curtain which has been pulled aside in this photo. The curtain is opened every morning and evening as part of daily worship.
